Microstep #6: Store immediately after use
This microstep is the last habit you need to learn of the step Store. This habit reminds you to get things done: store everything in its place right after you use it, or the job is not finished.
Let’s say you used a bucket to clean an oily floor. Once you finish, you need to store it in the same place, clean. If it is full of water or oily, it is not ready to use. The job is not done until all the items used are clean, charged, inspected or maintained, and stored in their respective homes. Just like when you finish dinner, you can put the dishes in the sink or put them directly into the dishwasher machine, the same behavior is useful at work.
You shouldn’t wait for the end of the day, or worse, the end of the week, to put everything back to its home. The magic of the Store phase is that you learn to store as you go. Use and store, use, and store. Daycares teach this to babies since they are very young. They use one toy, they store it. Teachers remind kids to store everything in its place before starting the next game. Organizing everything at the end of the day should not be a headache; most items should have already been restored to their original location when used.
