Microstep #5: Define a home for ease of use
This microstep is the habit of always organizing objects in a functional way, which allows you to immediately find what is needed when it is needed and especially how it is needed.
There is no better way to keep something clean than to prevent it from getting dirty in the first place. How do you prevent it? By assigning clear owners for the maintenance of each location/item. This is micro-step #7 in the 5S Your Life methodology, the first one in the shine step, to achieve self-organization and stop procrastination.
The third step of the 5S methodology is shine. This phase focuses on shining and cleaning everything to spot hidden problems (oil leaks, water drops, etc.). Cleaning is not just a matter of image; it is a matter of good communication. You can detect errors easily!
5s has been for a long type a tool to simply improve workplace organization and establishing a structure to initiate other lean implementations. 5S more than a tool, is a culture, and you can use it as a branding strategy.
