The United States and Cuba finally started working on normalizing their relationship. After several months of negotiations the US is planning to re-open its embassy in Havanna and reduce some of the restrictions between both countries. This was like a cold war, but in the end something could be done.  Obama said “We can’t keep doing the same thing over five decades and expect a different result,”,  a phrase that I love from Albert Einstein. I love it because it means a lot to me, it represents a mindset.
To me, It means that you cannot complain if you are not ready to change. It triggered my inner thoughts about something that we see very often in the companies I work for. Employees, managers, supplier, customers… all fighting because there are unresolved things that no one seems to feel like addressing. We always think that some body else should be doing something different, what about our impact on that same process? If for every time we would complain we were also analyzing our piece of responsibility lots of issues would be resolved instantly.

Castro said that both countries had profound differences, but still they had to learn to live with their differences in a civilized manner. As in every company, employees have different approaches, different ways of thinking, but still they all may be right partially. Communication channels needs to be opened in different ways in order to facilitate ideas sharing and mutual comprehension. But is has to start somewhere. Each of us as quality professionals, external consultants, internal employees, or just as neighbors, need to be conscious of the importance of listening to what others have to say, respect it, and only then talk about what we offer to improve. And this is the clue: “what we offer to improve”, not what we demand to be changed.
Every time we are fighting, a win-lose situation arise, which end reducing the total gain. If we all focus on win-win negotiations, I am truly convinced we will live in a better world and our organizations will be more efficient.

What do you think?
